ENStanislaw Kościałkowski was the initiator of establishing in 1915 two junior high schools in Vilnius: Zygmunt August Junior High School for Boys, and Eliza Orzeszkowa Junior High School for Girls, where he taught history and Polish literature. The Vilnius historian was one of the organizers of the Stefan Batory University in Vilnius. In 1923 lie became the head of the, created therein, Polish History Department. In 1937, he became a profesor zwyczajny (full professor). The centre of teaching activities at the University of Vilnius was the historical proseminar conducted between 1921 and 1939. From 1930, he conducted the M.A. seminar. Kościałkowski’s students include: Krystyna Adolphowa, Marta Burbianka, Aleksy Deruga, Antoni Golubiew, Eugeniusz Gulczyński, Leon Lech Beynar (Pawel Jasienica), Anna Kalenkiewiczówna, Lucjan Krawiec, Witold Nowodworski, Jerzy Orda, Maria and Paweł Mateusz Puciata, Wanda Tukanowicz, Bogumił and Wanda Zwolski, Leonid Żytkowicz. Their pre-war works give a succinct, well thought-out research programme, based on consistent methodological assumptions. In their research, Koscialkowski’s students focused on the broadly understood Lithuanian and Belorussian history from the Middle Ages, until the 19th century. The 1930s saw the rise of the young generation of Polish researchers of the Great Duchy of Lithuania. The work and plans of young historians were interrupted by war. Afterwards, the changed political landscape forced a reorientation of their historical interests. Research on Lithuanian history has been almost completely abandoned. Koscialkowski’s students, not willing to risk disfavour with the communist authorities, did not reveal their interests, or changed their fields of research. [From the publication]
