Summary / Abstract:

EN1890-1910 is the period when Modern literature appeared and developed in Russia. At that time the process of modernization was impossible in Lithuania because of the press prohibition. Lithuanian press (Aušra, Varpas) was illegal and mostly oriented to an individual's self-analysis and self-presentation. As a result was the literary image of Lithuania created in the neighbouring countries: formed by German and Polish Romantics, modem mythological and folklore studies in Russia and official political discourse by the Tsar Administration, Lithuania was presented as distant, mythical, medieval, barbarous, pagan and unique land, which did not exist any more in modern Europe. Russian modernists, Constantine Balmont first of all, transferred such image of Lithuania to Russian Modern literature. This romantic picture served well at the beginning, but later they started to ignore modem Lithuanian culture and imposed an idea about imaginary backwardness of Lithuanian culture. The literary image of Lithuania created during the press prohibition period and constant efforts by Lithuanian writers to modernize it could be treated as an outcome of imperialistic politics by Tsarist Russia.
