ENThe article reveals the ideals and life of the Lithuanian society "Ruta", founded one hundred years ago in Krakow. This question is resolved by investigating the statute and activity of the society, giving information about it's members. The members of this society were Lithuanians and Poles, involved in the culture, literature and history of Lithuania. They represented the Lithuanian culture in Krakow, organizing public lectures and trying to publish books about Lithuania. The program of this society was based on the 19th century ideas of the cultural and political co-operation between Lithuanians and Poles. This program was badly accepted Lithuania and Poland because of the political conflict and the ideas of the nationalism, which were propagated in the both states. The belated initiative of "Ruta", to invite to the common cultural work the Lithuanians and Poles, was destinated to fall. The most important work of "Ruta" was the first Lithuanian almanac called „Gabija", considered as a precursor of the modernism in Lithuanian literature. [From the publication]
