ENThe first postcards with views of Vilnius appeared over a hundred years ago. They used the works by well-known masters of photography of Vilnius. The oldest known illustrated Vilnius postcards bear the post stamps dated 1897. Postcards with views of Vilnius were published by local German, Russian, and Polish publishers. In Vilnius they were made by owners of bookshops, art, stationery and similar shops, photographers, newspaper owners, societies and various organisations. Klara Rio, David Vizun, Abraam Fialko, Antoni Żukowski, Władysław Borkowski and Boleslovas Stadzevičius were represented somewhat more widely. The somewhat forgotten name of Klara Rio was reminded based on the archival documents (the paper first mentions the case of granting Russian citizenship to an Austrian national Antonio Rio in 1899) and periodicals of the time. It was assumed that this could have been Carl Rio. However, it can now be asserted that the merchant Klara Rio and her art shop at 7 Pilies Street was well known, while there was no other postcard publisher with such a name from late 19'1' century to 1915. The paper also reminds of the activities of Boleslovas Stadzevičius, an active public figure and organiser of Lithuanian press, and specifies the period when he published postcards (1906- 1909) and their print-runs (mostly 1000-1500 items, of which 200 items were in Lithuanian). Vilnius publishers, adapting to the market requirements, published newer and more varied postcards. Publications which used artistic photographs, were nicely set and printed in the best printing shops of the time, and were in good demand. They have retained undisputed value to the study of our culture, history, urban development and book publishing. [From the publication]
