ENThe Lithuanian Archives of Image and Sound hold approximately 516,000 items of photographic documents, such as negatives, glass plates, positives, albums, vignettes, and about 3,000 photographic documents dating to the period until 1918. Approximately 2,000 of them are original positives. It is necessary to accomplish the following in order to implement the institutional preservation strategy as part of the national image and sound document strategy: (1) Setting up appropriate conditions for the preservation, control, regulation and support of documents. (2) Making an inventory of national photographic documents (as part of image and sound documents) and compilation of information about them. (3) Defining the part for compulsory preservation. (4) Transfer of the most valuable documents to modern media. (5) Setting up a database. (6) Setting up a search database. (7) Long-term preservation of media and documents in a flexible, open system compatible with the systems of other countries. (8) Ensuring use of digital images for public needs. The future work of the Lithuanian Archives of Image and Sound, like other institutions of national cultural heritage, depends on the available information, technical equipment and, most importantly, the level of public funding.
