Summary / Abstract:

ENDrawing on institutional theory and existing literature about obstacles to private businesses in transit countries, the author examines the impact of 19 related factors grouped into four types of obstacles (official, unofficial, environmental and skills-related) on activities of small and medium businesses located in Lithuania. Regression analysis of responses of 332 business owners selected for the survey indicates that observed formal obstacles are associated with unofficial obstacles such as corruption, while observed environmental obstacles are associated with skills-related obstacles, for example management problems. The impact of transit on beginning of a business is not significant.
