Knygoje tiriama Baltijos valstybių kaimo regionų transformacija, ypač akcentuojant dekolektyvizacijos poveikį. Skirtingai nuo kitų tokios temos knygų, pateikiamas gilus supratimas apie dekolektyvizaciją, procesą, kuris ne tik paveikė žemės ūkio gamybą, bet ir visą kaimo bendruomenę. Skaitytojui pateikiamas nepaprastai spalvingas kaimo pereinamojo laikotarpio paveikslas, kuris leidžia susidaryti nuomonę apie kaimo piliečių bendruomenes, pokyčius žemės ūkyje, verslus, skurdą, vyresnio amžiaus žmones ir turizmą. Knygą parengė suomių, estų, latvių ir lietuvių tyrėjai. Redaktorius profesorius Ilkka Alanen įžangoje žada pateikti kaimo problemos analizę, kuri apima platesnę sritį, nei žemės ūkio ekonomika. Siekiant suprasti kaimo pasikeitimus, jis remiasi sociologija ir istorija, nes žemės ūkio privatizacija reiškė esminius pasikeitimus ne tik ekonomikoje, bet ir socialinėje srityje. Jis taip pat abejoja, ar įmanomas ekonomikos augimas po tokios žemės ūkio reformos, kokia buvo padaryta Baltijos šalyse. Knyga pradedama mintimi, kad dekolektyvizacija pagreitino socialinį ir ekonominį susisluoksniavimą kaimo vietovėse. Viena iš pagrindinių darbo temų yra taikytų pereinamojo laikotarpio politikų kritinė analizė. Pagrindinė knygos vertė yra daugelio kaimo pokyčių aspektų palyginimas. ENThe author reviews the book “Mapping the Rural Problem in the Baltic Countryside: Transition Processes in the Rural Areas of Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania” (editor - Ilkka Alanen). The book examines the transformation of rural regions of the Baltic States, emphasizing the effects of de-collectivization. Differently from other books on the subject, a deep understanding of de-collectivization, i. e. the process which influenced both rural economy production and the entire rural community, is provided. The reader is provided a very colourful picture of the transitional period of rural areas, which gives a possibility to form an opinion on rural communities, changes in agriculture, business, poverty, senior citizens and tourism. The book was prepared by Finnish, Estonian, Latvian and Lithuanian researchers. In his preface, editor Professor Ilkka Alanen promises to provide an analysis of the rural problem, covering a broader area than rural economy itself. In order for the reader to understand the changes in rural areas, Alanen bases his conclusions on sociology and history, since the privatization of rural economy resulted in essential changes both in economics and in social areas. Alanen also expresses doubts whether economic growth is possible after the rural economy reform, performed in the Baltic States. The book is started with the idea that the de-collectivization accelerated emergence of social and economic castes in rural areas. One of the most important topics of study is critical analysis of the policies, applied during the transitional period. The main value of the book lies in the comparison of most aspects of changes in rural areas. On the other hand, the provision of a lot of aspects is also a disadvantage, since it gives the impression that certain subjects are worth much more attention than just three pages at the end of the book.
