Summary / Abstract:

ENThe period discussed in the article was singled out by its special importance for the development of Lithuanian intellectual and national self-consciousness. Declaring of national independence in 1918, and creation of Lithuanian Republic constituted just part of work, required for the further formation of Lithuanian national identity. Therefore the political independence of the State had to be secured and consolidated by Lithuanian writers, artists, cultural researchers and philosophers. This task in turn required establishing new University in Kaunas, w hich w'as to take over the role and functions of the lost University' in Vilnius. Subsequently Kaunas University - was named in honor of the great Lithuanian duke Vytautas. In 1922-1940. the Vytautas Magnus University in Kaunas constituted appropriate environment for further fostering, promotion and development of Lithuanian national, cultural and intellectual identity. problems should be considered among the most important constituents of Lithuanian national identity and self-identification. The most prominent Lithuanian philosophers of the time, discussed in some detail by the author of this article, are: A. Dambrauskas-Jakśtas, S. Śalkauskis, P. Dovydaitis, P. Kuraitis, V. Sezemanas and others. The author of the article also points out the important role of Russian and Polish thinkers like V. Solovjov and J. Hoene-Wronsky, in development of Lithuanian philosophical thought.Concepts like the little creator, totality, devised and introduced by these thinkers, as well as notions borrowed from natural sciences and other disciplines, like evolution, predestination, transcendence, gnoseology, synthesis, culture, morals, national self-consciousness. became key concepts for Lithuanian philosophers. The glossary of philosophical terms compiled by S. Śalkauskis should be appreciated as an especially outstanding achievement of Lithuanian national philosophy, as well as the intellectual heritage of V. Sezemanas, who wrote in Lithuanian, although himself being not a native Lithuanian.
