Timothy Snyder. The reconstruction of nations. Poland Ukraine, Lithuania, Belarus 1569-1999 : recenzija

LTTimothy Snyder.is nagrinėja tautų atgimimo, tautinių judėjimų, tautinių valstybių susidarymo, kartu ir tautinės nesantaikos bei to, kas XX a. vadinama etniniu valymu, klausimus. Autorius pažymi, kad teritorijoje, apie kurią rašoma, XIX a. aktyviai vyko tautinio identiteto paieškų ir formavimosi procesai. Tautiniai sąjūdžiai dažnai tapatindavosi ir būdavo tapatinami su antilenkiškumu, patiems lenkams jie dažnai taip pat atrodydavo pavojingiausi, tačiau nepaisant to, autoriaus nuomone, aiškus ir regioninis lenkų-lietuvių (lenkų-ukrainiečių) identitetas, ypač kaimo vietovėse. Kalbant apskritai, Timothy Snyder.is pateikė gilią sintetinę Lenkijos ir jos Rytų kaimynų istorijos bei moderniųjų tautų (lenkų, lietuvių, baltarusių ir ukrainiečių) raidos studiją. Nepaisant praeityje dažnai tragiškos patirties ir to, kad ši praeitis daugelio žmonių sąmonėje gyva, santykiai tarp Lenkijos ir jos Rytų kaimynų po 1989 m. susiklostė kaip geros kaimynystės pavyzdys. Lenkija buvo pirmoji valstybė, pripažinusi Lietuvos ir Ukrainos nepriklausomybę. Kaip ir praeityje, šiuolaikinės Lietuvos ir Lenkijos valstybės įkūnija patrauklų politinį Europos Sąjungos idealą. Jų pavyzdys, Snyder.io manymu, išliks patrauklus ukrainiečiams, baltarusiams ir rusams. ENTimothy Snyder examines the issues of resurrection of nations, national movements, formation of national states and disagreements between nations and the aspect, which in the 20th century was called ethnic cleansing. The author notes that processes of searching for and formation of national identity were actively going on the territory in question in the 19th century. The national movements quite frequently identified themselves and were identified with anti-Polishness, the Poles themselves also viewed the movements as dangerous, however, despite that, in the author’s opinion, the regional identity of Poles-Lithuanians (Poles-Ukrainians), especially in rural areas, was rather clear. In general terms, Timothy Snyder provides a deep synthetic study of the history of Poland and its Eastern neighbours and development of modern nations (Poles, Lithuanians, Byelorussians and Ukrainians). Notwithstanding the frequently tragic experience of the past and the fact that the past is still alive within the consciousness of most people, the relations between Lithuania and its Eastern neighbours after 1989 emerged as an example of good neighbourship. Poland was the first state, which acknowledged the independence of Lithuania and the Ukraine. As in the past, the modern states of Poland and Lithuania encompass an attractive political ideal of the European Union. In Snyder’s opinion, their example will remain attractive to Ukrainians, Byelorussians and Russians. Timothy Snyder’s study is an important contribution into researching of both the dichotomy of political nationalism of the Western Europe and ethnic nationalism of the Eastern Europe and the national identity related problems in the modern times history of Europe.
