ENMacroeconomic stability of the economy largely depends on the state of public finances. The current situation of public finances of the EU countries limits such opportunities. Extensive fiscal instruments, as defined in the Maastricht Treaty and the Stability and Growth Pact, were not able to prevent over-indebtedness of these states. As a consequence, they did not protect the entire EU and the euro zone from the crisis. The subject under discussion in this article is the budget deficit and public debt of Lithuania in relation to the EU countries (new and old member states). The research covers the period between 2005 and 2014. While analysing the data from Eurostat and the Lithuanian Department of Statistics, statistical and descriptive methods have been used.
