ENThe publication thoroughly presents the biography, the creative path, the best-known works and the links with Lithuania of the artist Nikodemas Silvanavičius, whose 170th anniversary was marked in 2004. The Lithuanian public is well enough acquainted with N. Silvanavičius’ works. Quite a number of them can be seen in Vilnius Picture Gallery by a lucky chance – a large enough collection of the artist’s works found its way to the Lithuanian Art Museum (34 paintings and 7 drawings). Among them also rank the pictures which witness certain stages in the artist’s creative biography namely, Herdsman from the Environs of Švenčionys, Portrait of the Rural District’s Headman, etc., which charm the visitors to the gallery by their simplicity and sincerity. N. Silvanavičius’ works are kept not only in Lithuania but also in the Belarus Art Museum, Petersburg’s museums and private collections. Vilnius – based Rita Petrauskienò possesses the artist’s family photographs and some of his personal things. The inhabitants of Birštonas cherish a hope to found the artist’s memorable museum in their town. [From the publication]
