ENThe article analyzes a play by Marius Ivaškevičius based on the experience of Lithuanian citizens who emigrated to London at the beginning of this century. Identity is conceived as the ability to create and articulate one’s own narrative which expresses the emigrant’s personal history on the levels of genre (form) and discourse (language). The story of Benas Ivanovas, the play’s main character, is created as a drama. It is a psychological condition and a form of story-telling in which the direct speech of the characters reveals the social context of Lithuania and displays the manifestations of identity constructed in one’s own space. These manifestations appear in an unfamiliar environment as signs the meaning of which may be unrepresented and not conveyed. The construction of identity is a search for representation while one is seeking to be recognized in an alien culture; in other words, while seeking to pass from a semiotic level of signs to a symbolic level of power.
