ENWhen the oil painting on canvas “The Trial of Jesus”, which belongs to the Basilica of the Blessed Virgin Mary in Šiluva, was delivered to Pranas Gudynas Restoration Center (Branch of the Lithuanian Art Museum), it was in extremely poor condition. Almost 200 years of usage, inappropriate storage and transporting conditions as well as attempts to preserve decaying canvas by some unknown restorer - all these consequences left traces in the painting. First of all the painting was thoroughly examined at the restoration laboratory. All the necessary microbiological and chemical analyses together with photographic fixation were carried out. The microbiologist Irena Bubinienė estimated the level of microbiological pollution and performed initial disinfection of both sides of the painting. The chemical analyses were carried out by the restoration technologist Dalia Panavaitė. The results of these analyses helped to define the original priming, paint and surface coating of the painting. The most difficult task of the restoration was to flatten out the canvas and to glue up the tears which had deformed the picture - divided up bodies and faces of the depicted people. The restoration and conservation of the painting was carried out by the author of this article and painting restorer Brigita Kaupytė. After restoration, the colours of the painting became fresher, the main composition as well as the letterings, figures and other details of the painting regained its original expression. This rare oil painting, dating back to the beginning of the 18th century and which was supposedly created especially for The Basilica of Šiluva, now is like born anew. [From the publication]
