ENIn the first decades of the Soviet period when the lack of ideologically suitable belles-lettres appeared books of the authors of the pre-war began to be issued, after being suitably rewritten and (or) reedited. With the very great lack of literature for children, on the initiative of the then head of the Children’s Section of the State Fiction Publishing House Aldona Liobytė, the novelettes Auksinis batelis (Little Golden Shoe) and Trys bičiuliai (Three Friends) (both 1937, 1957) by Bronė Buivydaitė (1895–1984) were given a new life. Having installed Buivydaitė anew in the literary life, Liobytė frequently encouraged the writer not to put down her pen, cared for the republication of her previously written works, not without her moral support were written also the memoirs books Pro vaikystės langą (Through the Window of Childhood, 1969) and Vargai vartus kilnoja (Miseries Raise the Gates, 1982). In the Archive of Lithuania’s Literature and Art are stored a bundle of Liobytė’s letters to Buivydaitė written in 1956–1971, encompassing the peripeteias of the preparation for publishing of the two mentioned novelettes. On the one hand, they reveal the publishing situation of that time, the various ways of Soviet surveillance and coercion, but, on the other hand, show how the stimulus, support, advice and sensitivity of one person become rooted in another, giving a sense to the being of both and the calling to create with new creations and preserving the faith of humanity under any kind of circumstances. In a subjective sense the letters are discussed from these aspects: 1) issues of the editing of republished books; 2) other works intended to be reissued; 3) theatre issues; 4) personal matters. Subsequently the letters are presented in chronological order with commentaries, prepared on the basis of archival documents and other available sources. [From the publication]
