ENThe discussion of the network of parishes indicates not only the change in church administrative units but can also allow one to decide about the policies carried out by the civilian authorities which were most clearly expressed by the closing of churches or the abolition of the projects (on the example of the Holy Apostles Peter and Paul Church) to close also individual parishes. During the whole period under discussion there were a total of fourteen parishes in the Vilnius city. The abolition of parishes and the creation of new ones occurred only in the first half of 19th century although at the beginning of the 20th century permission was granted to establish a new parish, but one did not succeed in doing this in time. The territory held by the parishes was not stable, it changed, depending on circumstances, although from the middle of the 19th century until the beginning of the 20th century the network of parishes did not change, but with the population settling in new regions of Vilnius the size of the territory held by some of the parishes grew. One should also note the fact that the territory of some of the Vilnius parishes was not only within the borders of the city, but also in the rural territories beyond the borders of the Vilnius city. This of course was not a distinguishing feature of Vilnius. Three churches from the closed churches of the monasteries were again allowed to function. [From the publication]
