Summary / Abstract:

ENTrakai is surrounded by the interconnected lakes of Galvė, Bernardinai, Totoriškiai, Nerepinka and Skaistis. Historical sources and data from oral tradition allow us to state that once they all were a single lake, Galvė, which, as the city was founded, gained the name of Trakai lake. It is still believed that every year at least one person must drown in this lake. Such a belief can be related to pre-Christian rituals and even sacrifices. In Trakai this legend gained new versions, in which motifs of drowning, sacrifice and punishment are related to the activities of Vytautas, the Grand Duke of Lithuania, and St. John of Nepomuk, patron saint of Trakai. The vitality of the narrative is supported by the people of Trakai being constantly face to face with the element of water. The relationship of people with the lake are permeated not only with daily, but also metaphysical experiences. Stories from older generation people in Trakai allow us to state that a dialogue has been taking place for centuries, and the lake is perceived as an individual, as a subject and a power, which could impact the fates of the town of Trakai and its people.
