Summary / Abstract:

ENTrakai is a small town, located on a peninsula between lakes. It is often associated with Lithuanian medieval heritage - castles. In the second half of the 20th c. city reorganisation projects were implemented. After them, the city’s southern part, which was previously dominated by fields and gardens, modest wooden homes, was turned into a block of multi-story housing. Conservationists perceive these changes very negatively, while the local population assessed it in two ways - for some it symbolises an improved way of life, for others it is associated with the disbandment of the urban community. This is the part of the city that one sees first when they arrive in Trakai coming from the direction of Vilnius. Already in the 19th c. there are mentions that this was the location of the town gates, called rogatka in Polish. From this also rose the name of the town’s southern part. This is a border territory, where urban and peri-urban features overlap, where the past and the future come face to face. In the article, based on stories from the memories of the people of Trakai, this part of the space is analysed as an organic part of the town, as a part of the lives of different people.
