Summary / Abstract:

ENThis article is dedicated to discussing the works of the literary classic, Julija Žymantienė-Žemaitė (1845– 1921). As an author, Žemaitė gave a bright start to Lithuanian prose fiction where convincing, true-life human destinies, interesting narrative first appeared. She was an exceptional individual, with a strong nature, great vital powers, endurance, love, the ability to perceive, to recognise people. Žemaitė was the first woman in Lithuanian culture to gain authority among her contemporaries. Without a higher education, but not uneducated, Žemaitė immersed herself in the early-20th c. Lithuanian public and cultural life, participated in the women rights movement, made an impact through public speaking. The Lithuanian language (primarily - the Samogitian dialect), bubbled within her like an inexhaustible source - even linguists learned language from Žemaitė. The Lithuanian language is full of examples from the works of Žemaitė, her idioms form a coherent text that feels, evaluates the world. From her memoirs, journalistic writings and autobiography the history of the time she lived in (from the 1863 Uprising to the creation of Independent Lithuania) and her personal story are revealed. Thanks to the works of Žemaitė, the experience of the farmers, the culture of the land, reaches us. Žemaitė, as a storyteller, retained in her consciousness remarkable relics, images of the old Lithuanian sense of nature. [From the publication]
