EN"False friends" are words in two languages which are written or sound similarly but have different meaning. They also exist between the Lithuanian and Italian languages. In a previous article, the author provided a list of "false friends" and used it to evaluate their influence during the learning process of the Italian language. This study intends to enlarge the list with a new group of "false friends" and to introduce a new kind of linguistic interference, which the author calls "onomastic interference". Lithuanian words producing “false friends” with the Italian language are often "international" words, which were imported in Lithuanian from Latin, Greek, French and other languages. During the Middle Ages, many Latin words became "international" and were used in many parts of Europe. Later, also words of other languages became popular in Europe, including Lithuania. For the purposes of usage in the Lithuanian language, these words were more or less modified but sometimes their meaning changed and they produced "false friends". The new list of "false friends" in this study includes Lithuanian words of both "international" and Lithuanian origin. Onomastics is the science related to the study of proper names (personal names or geographical names). In this study, however, only the onomastics of personal names is taken into account, namely the anthroponomastics. The author describes a new problem of false analogies which in some cases can influence the understanding of language. In fact, some Lithuanian personal names produce words that have some meaning in the Italian language. A problem of misunderstanding could rise at low levels of language learning. Lithuanian names can also have a shorter form, and this often produces a false analogy with some Italian words. A list of Lithuanian names shows the false analogies with the Italian language. Some of the names are rare, but the list does not take in account the level of their spread in Lithuania. The main goal of the wordlists provided in this study is to contribute to the realization of a dictionary of "false friends" and "onomastic interferences" between the Lithuanian and Italian languages. Such a dictionary could be very useful both for students and scholars of those two languages. [From the publication]
