ENThere were many competent and educated courtiers in the service of the Radziwilłs of Birže in the first half of the 17th century, who formed a culturally distinct circle. Literary talented servants commented upon the works of each other (the most praised were Salomon Rysiński and Daniel Naborowski, although even they encountered caustic remarks and polemic paraphrases). Often in their letters and speeches secretaries of Birže used plural to emphasise the community and friendly atmosphere among the courtiers. The Radziwills’ writers took up common themes and shared common opinions about religious persecutions or discriminated protestant books. The majority of their texts remained in manuscripts, published were mainly writings emphasising the Radziwills’ features (dedications, poems to the coat of arms) and praises of other courtiers. Research into the Radziwills clients not only in partnership with their patron, but also as a united community allows us to better reveal the culture-producing role of this milieu.
