ENRelations of magnates with the royal court and its courtiers showed the importance of the house. In the latter half of the 16th century the Radziwills, keeping their leading status among the lords of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania, maintained close relations with the entourage of rulers, especially of King Sigismund August. Also during the reign of the first elective kings they held various Lithuanian court offices being a steppingstone to further career. Often the offices were giving them also the control over the Polish royal court. In addition, the Radziwills House was connected with the royal court also through a multitude of protegees, clients and agents of the Radziwills, serving as kings’ courtiers and servants. Owing to them, and to the Radziwills’ friends from among high court officials, the family was able to gain information about all events from the closest entourage of the king and about his doings. In various situations the Radziwills cooperated with the court and its servants. Between the Radziwills and the king’s court couriers were circulating with information and letters. Occasionally, the Radziwills servants were paid from the king’s treasury. [From the publication]
