Summary / Abstract:

ENIn the local society of the Great Duchy of Lithuania the manor played a dominating part of the social life. Manors in the Duchy of Birþai were a very important social institution of communication for all local society. The regional analysis of economic relations shows the different levels of economic life relations in Radvilos’ manor: intensive communication among the manors in the Duchy of Birþai, close connection with other Radvilos’ manors in ethnic Lithuania and Belarus, specific relations with Vilnius and Kaunas, and a strong commercial attraction of Riga’s port and Courland’s towns. A striking example of the development of European innovations through Riga was appearance of Dutch cattle in the manors of the Duchy of Birþai since 1615. Most probably this was also a new thing in the Great Duchy of Lithuania.
