ENThe activities of magistrates’ courts are an important aspect in studying the system of city management. The history of the wojt and jurors’ court in Grodno in the early 17th century is presented in historiography rather fragmentarily. The author of the present paper focuses on the practices of the court and their compatibility with the law; the composition of the court; and kinds of documents attached to the court registers. The main research problem is lack of a considerable number of available sources, as the oldest court register dates from as late as 1639-1644. The judiciary system in Grodno was made up of the mayor and councillors’ court, wojt’s court, wojt and jurors’ court and criminal court. The wojt ’s court and the wojt and jurors’ court were directly linked with each other. The wojt and jurors’ court played an important role in the system of town administration. Its competencies included adjudicating property and criminal disputes. Additionally, private legal documents (wills, agreements of purchase and sale, contracts of donation, etc.) were attached to court registers. Since family archives of Grodno citizens have not been preserved, the official registers contain unique documents regarding histories of individual families. Furthermore, the documentation of the wojt and jurors’ court is clear evidence of the division of competencies between the council and the jury. It shou ld be noted that this situation was not the same in all towns and for this reason any study of courts’ compliance with the Magdeburg law requires individual treatment. [From the publication]
