Summary / Abstract:

LTPublikacijoje pateikiama neskelbta lietuvių muzikologo Adeodato Tauragio (1936–2004) korespondencija su britų kompozitoriumi Benjaminu Brittenu (1913–1976), jo kūrybos propaguotojais ir kitais susijusiais asmenimis, parengta remiantis Britteno-Pearso fondo archyvu (Jungtinė Karalystė) ir Adeodato Tauragio archyvu. Retas Sovietų Lietuvos ir užsienio muzikų bendradarbiavimo epizodas šaltojo karo metais atspindi kultūrinio laisvėjimo procesus. A. Tauragio ir B. Britteno ryšiai užsimezgė XX a. 7-ojo dešimtmečio pradžioje, kai lietuvių muzikologas susidomėjo britų kompozitoriaus kūryba. Aptariamu laikotarpiu A. Tauragis pradėjo rengti straipsnius apie modernią užsienio muziką, publikavo pirmąją Sovietų Sąjungoje knygą apie žymiausio XX a. britų kompozitoriaus B. Britteno kūrybą (išleista 1965 m. Maskvoje rusų kalba), prisidėjo prie šio kompozitoriaus muzikos populiarinimo Lietuvoje.

ENAdeodatas Tauragis (1936–2004) was one of the most prominent and active Lithuanian musicologists in the second part of the 20th century. In the years 1959–1962 he studied in Moscow’s Tchaikovsky Conservatory under the supervision of Roman Gruber – an important music historian of the day. This is where he took interest in the works of one of the most famous English composers – Benjamin Britten (1913–1976). These years also collided with political climate changes: the 1960s are often described in as the “thaw” of the USSR. The General Secretary of the Communist Party Nikita Krushchev was looking for ideological grounds to prove the Soviet system to be superior to capitalism. Meanwhile, arts and science proved to be very useful in this case. That fostered a cultural exchange between East and West and led to the “British Music Festival” which was held in Moscow in 1962. It also became an opportunity for Tauragis (at that time – Pėželis), to meet Benjamin Britten in person. The collection of letters in this publication represents the correspondence of Tauragis and Britten as well as related correspondence. The Britten-Pears Foundation archive holds 9 of the related documents – they are all in this publication. The Adeodatas Tauragis archive (private property) has 14 documents, however, some of them – 3 letters of Tauragis to Britten – are copies of the ones held in the Britten-Pears Foundation archive. From Tauragis’ archive, only the letters that are relevant to the topic are presented in this publication.
