ENInterpretation of "Muslim or Islamic faith..." by J. Sobolewski, a Polish Tatar and Muslim, is the first catechism of Islam published in Polish (1830), addressed to Lithuanian and Polish followers ofthat religion. The publication quotes passages from Koran in Polish translation. Bearing in mind that in those days the only Polish translation of Koran existed in form of handwritten Muslim tefsirs, where Polish language of that translation was written in Arabic alphabet, a question arises, which sources were used by Sobolewski as quotations included in his Interpretations Comparative studies of different versions allowed to establish an identity in form and contents of Koran citations used in the catechism with the finished before 1828, but yet unpublished translation of the Islamic Holy Book by Vilnius filomats (members of a secret student society at Vilnius University in 1817-1823) - D. Chlewinski and I. Domeyko. At the same time it is possible to point to important differences in form and contents between relevant passages of the Holy Book in Sobolewski's publication and in tefsirs of Lithuanian and Polish Tatars. Thus comparative research leads to conclusion that Sobolewski did not quote neither tefsirs, nor passages of tefsir translation of the Islamic Holy Book, referred to and commented in Muslim kitabs and chamails.
