ENThe purpose of the analysis is to trace the etymology of the names of pagan gods in the Polish translations of the Bible and the Quran as well as to show the methods of translating them from Hebrew, Greek, and Arabic. It also attempts at determining: - whether the idioms used in the writing of the Polish and Lithuanian Tatars (further referred to as Tatars WKL) and in the Polish translations of the Quran are typical of these texts in the context of the so-called Quranic idioms, - whether and to what extent these idioms resemble the ones used in the Bible or in the Polish language or its variety used in the north of the Kingdom of Poland and Grand Duchy of Lithuania. Shall the analysis reveal that these idioms reflect the ones used in the Bible and the Polish language, it shall further determine the scope and nature of relations between the translations of the Bible and the Quran. The purpose of the study is also to present the image of pagan gods as described in the source texts. The source material comes from a number of texts varying with regard to their form and the time of creation. The selected words were taken from both the Polish translations of the Koran (19th and 20th century) and old texts of Lithuanian and Polish Tatars (preserved copies of 16th century texts) written with Arabic spelling requiring transcription and transliteration. These are Muslim religious texts and they were chosen taking into consideration the thematic criterion. The words were also selected from the translations of the Bible (16th and 17th century and the contemporary versions). [From the publication]
