ENThe theatre of Oskaras Koršunovas from its beginning opposed the lyrical and metaphorical tradition of Lithuanian theatre and became a sign of a new theatrical era. The changes that occurred after the collapse of the Soviet Union forced the artists to search for a new artistic language, which was suitable to describe the current reality. Koršunovas found it in the texts of Russian avant-garde artists from the group OBERIU: Daniil Kharms and Alexander Vvedensky. Basing on their texts he created his first performances: Ten būti čia (1990), Senė (1992), Senė 2 (1994) and Labas Sonia Nauji Metai (1994), full of paradoxes and the surreal theatre games which proved to be extremely accurate in commenting the peculiarity of the post-Soviet reality of the reviving Lithuania. They corresponded to the need to redefine the country’s identity and its place in the world. In the article the theatrical language of these performances is analyzed with regard to the means by which Koršunovas described the surrounding political and social reality. The theatre that emerges from his way of thinking comments on current events and reflects the social atmosphere through texts and formal tools, seemingly abstract and far away from everyday life.
