ENThe subject of this article is the Lithuanian school and students young people’s attitude towards their own dialect based on questionnaire researches and interviews. People between 16 and 26 years old have been examined, the ones who use the Lithuanian dialect of Punskas and its surroundings in the Suwałki region. The respondents were divided into two groups - students of grammar school and its former pupils - on account of the essential differences in distribution and the scope of using individual language codes. The results show that the Lithuanian dialect of Punskas has a big prestige in both examined groups. For the majority of respondents it has a status of mother language and it is an essential element of national, regional and cultural identification. Both groups share their conviction that this local dialect should be handed down from generation to generation. The differences between these examined groups concern the scope and frequency of using this dialect. The local environment enables the local grammar school’s pupils to use the local dialect code every day in unofficial and half-official situations (with family members, neighbours, relatives, friends and with other persons - at home, at school during the breaks, in the street, in the shops and in the local offices). There is only one limitation in this case - it is a recipient who must know the Lithuanian dialect of Punskas. In the case of the former pupils the configuration of every day using language codes - the choice of education country decides: in Poland Polish takes over the role of everyday contacts’ language, in Lithuania - common Lithuanian. Because the studies are generally connected with changing the living place, the scope using the dialect is significantly limited - it is connected with family members and friends’ contacts.
