Summary / Abstract:

ENNumber of studies indicated that academic achievement is influenced by different factors, such as cognitive (mental abilities / functions) and noncognitive capabilities (personality traits and environment) (Chamorro-Premuzic, Furnham, 2003, 2003a; Fabio, Busoni, 2007; Farsides, Woodfield, 2003; Giunta et al. 2013; Hakimi, Hejazia, Lavasania, 2011; Paunonen, Ashton, 2001; Wagerman, Funder, 2007). Researchers revealed the importance of the Big Five personality traits in predicting academic efficiency. Studies report that academic achievement is mostly influenced by Consciousness (Paunonen, Ashton, 2001; Chamorro-Premuzic, Furnham, 2003). Students scoring high in Consciousness are motivated to learn, they plan their time better and attend lectures more carefully than those who are less conscious. As a result, they achieve better results at the universities. Significance of other personality factors (Extraversion, Openness to Experience, Agreeableness and Neuroticism) explaining results of academic achievement is somewhat mixed and varies depending of the studies. The aim of this study was to explore the link between the personality traits of Lithuanian University of Educational Sciences (LEU) students and their academic results. Assessment of personality traits of LEU students was based on HEXACO – six-factor personality model. Results indicated positive link between LEU students’ academic achievement and their prudence (subdimension of Consciousness). The rest of personality traits measured by HEXACO did not show significant correlations between personality characteristics and academic indicators of LEU students.
