Summary / Abstract:

ENThe decorative purpose of Lithuanian folk fabrics was not less important than the practical one, so a lot of attention was devoted to the diversity of patterns and combinations of various colors. This article discusses the fabric dyeing techniques, their patterns, colors, and the use of fabrics. Depending on the type of the fabric, several different techniques were used: dyeing with the use of additional material: wax, buckwheat or wheat porridge, linseed paste, and sometimes - clay; imprinting of patterns by the use of special stamps: plates of various size and form; stencil dyeing by the use of a cardboard or tin stencils; and mixed-technique dyeing that combined several dyeing techniques. Beginning with the second-half of 19th century, with the increased use of commercially made fabrics, locally produced fabrics gradually lost their appeal and disappeared. Peasant textile collection in the National Museum of Lithuania consists of 105 exhibits, 11 of them arc dyed by hand in Lithuania.
