ENPresenting the ceramics tools collection commissioned by the ethnic culture department at the Lithuanian National Museum. This collection covers the first half of the 20th century. It includes wooden, clay, horn and metal tools used in the creation of ceramic objects – from preparation of the clay to the final ceramic product. These implements include: tools used when preparing clay include knives and planes; tools specific to throwing clay on a potter’s wheel including stands used to form the pots and hand tools; tools used to make specific forms such as pot handles and ewer spouts and paddles used to smooth internal and external walls of pots; implements used for decorating ceramic objects such as carving, pressing and patterning tools. The collection also includes special two- and three-legged racks that were used to prevent the pot from collapsing when it was baked in the kiln, and clay plates that were placed between the pots during transport to the market to prevent breakage.
