Summary / Abstract:

ENThe aim of the article is to view the development of the science of ethnology in the perspective of bibliographies compiled by Vacys Milius, with the following objectives: 1) to review Milius s bibliographical publications and his contribution to the process of formation of the science of ethnology: 2) to present The Bibliography of Lithuanian Ethnology and its classification features in greater detail. The first bibliography of Lithuanian ethnology compiled by Milius was published in 1963. It includes the ethnological publications that appeared from 1945 to 1961. While attending a colloquium of ethnographers of the Baltic countries in Berlin in 1966, he took interest in The International Bibliography of Ethnology (Internationale Volkskundliche Bibliographie) published in Bonn. From 1969 bibliographical data of Lithuanian ethnology and folklore studies submitted by Milius were occasionally published in this international bibliography. Milius regularly edited bibliographical publications of various nature. He compiled bibliographies of ethnographic surveys, agrarian and folk customs, the magazine Gimtasai kraštas (1934-1943), a bibliography of Samogitian ethnology devoted to a separate ethnographic region, and bibliographies of works by A. Daniliauskas, R. Merkienė, N. Vėlius (together with R. Repšienė), and A. Vyšniauskaitė (together with Marija Grigaitytė). However, the most important are two editions of his Bibliography of Lithuanian Ethnology generalizing the development of ethnology from the earliest times until 2002, published in 2001 and 2005.1 would agree with A. Čepaitienė’s thought that these bibliographies help to build a solid foundation for the science of ethnology. A great deal of important information can be found in the forewords to the bibliographies, in which the author assesses the development of the science of ethnology and offers new directions of scientific research. To generalize Miliuss bibliographic activity, it can be stated that the professor made a significant contribution to the development of the Lithuanian science of ethnology, its continuity and the search for new fields of research. While systemizing bibliographies, he also created and improved the classification of the fields of ethnology, which is revealed by Milius’s thoughts expressed in the forewords to his bibliographies. I also think that another aspect of his bibliographic activity, the introduction of Lithuanian ethnology to the international world of science, is no less important. Justly called the chronicler of Lithuanian ethnology, Milius dedicated himself to bibliographic work with great passion and diligence. This lifelong work is the professor’s legacy to the present and future generations.
