ENThe book-source by Haris S. Woede (1902-1983) is published in Lithuanian more than a half century later. The book is a testimony of the knowledge of the once-ending heritage and efforts to nurture it under the conditions of exile. The book provides a summarized knowledge about the variety, origins and development of fishermen boat's vanes of the Curonian Lagoon from flags and colourful planks to complex brightly coloured wind planks. The manufacture of this kind of handicrafts, the emergence of coloured planks and the dependence on the settlements of the Eastern Prussia are presented in detail. The book presents the drawings of vanes kept in the German museums and colour combinations in their boom years. The summary of historic vanes is provided in the appendix. The connection between the manufacture of vanes and the folk art of other regions of the world are revealed. The book is complemented by the article on the life and creative activity of the folk artist researcher H. S. Woede.
