ENThis review presents and critically discusses the famous Lithuanian ethno-astronomer Jonas Vaiškūnas’ book Reading the Heaven’s Signs: Following the Traces of the Lithuanian Zodiac. First of all, the book’s strong points are presented: in the reviewer’s opinion, this is one of the most serious and prominent research in the field of Baltic mythology. Then the reviewer regretfully notes that parts of the book, especially the last chapter, have some flaws: the author, to his very seriously reconstructed ancient Lithuanian Zodiac symbols, arbitrarily adds fanciful psychological characteristics. The main conclusion of the reviewer is to advise the reader to make a very clear distinction between impeccable scientific reconstruction and the far-fetched, superficial “popular” interpretations.
