Summary / Abstract:

LTStraipsnyje nagrinėjamas vienas pradinių privataus archyvo kaupimo etapų – XVI a. XVI a. XVI a. LDK bajorijos archyvuose daugumą dokumentų sudarė einamųjų reikalų raštai. XVI a. LDK didikų archyvų dokumentai chronologiškai siekė XIV a. pabaigą – XV a. pradžią. ENThe article analyses the initial stage of the accumulation of private archives, namely the documents once held, preserved and lost by members of the gentry of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania (the GDL) in the 16th c. and collections that were made of them. An attempt is made to reconstruct the gentry’s archives of that period and, on the basis of the material of the Lithuanian Metrica, to review the information about the amount of documents kept by the gentry and features typical of those archives, paying particular attention to the oldest documents. In the 16th c., the Lithuanian gentry were aware of the importance of writing and stored the received documents. In that period the archives of the middle and lesser gentry were in the initial stage of formation. The material of the Lithuanian Metrica contains valuable information about the status of contemporary archives. An investigation of 140 16th-c. books of the Lithuanian Metrica showed that archivally important files were recorded in each of them more than once. Almost 500 files of this kind were found. They dealt mostly with the reports about lost documents and seals, cases about falsified and destroyed documents and the transfer of immovable property or debt. The number and nature of documents kept were in relative proportion to a boyar’s status in society. The smaller the possessions and the lower the post, the smaller was the amount of documents. The data confirm historians’ assertions about large archives accumulated by the noblemen of the GDL in the 16th c. The study also reveals the nobility's easier access to the renewal of lost documents and the ways of accumulating the archives and their storage places.
