ENToday the most important determinant of the dependence on the nation is the individual subjective feeling of national identification. The aims of this article are: How is it possible to classify Orthodox, Russian-speaking magnates and gentry, who participated in the political life of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania in the 16th and the 18th centuries? How did they identify themselves? Inscriptions of 1582-1798 in the catalogues of ordinands in the Seminary of Pope in Vilnius show that Russian people identified themselves according their territorial and religious dependence. Sometimes they called themselves Lithuanians. However it had only political and territorial sense. Still in the 17th century Orthodox faith was maintained Russian religion, and belonging to Orthodox Church meant that this person was Russian. It is very hard to find ethnical severalty in the sources. Conversion of Russians into Catholicism facilitated their polonization. [From the publication]
