ENThe tradition of modem Lithuanian soldiers as a social group developed throughout the uprisings of the 19th century, therefore without deeper knowledge of the phenomenon of the armed forces at that time it would be impossible to perceive the object of the Lithuanian army. The article is dedicated to a rather poorly investigated issue, namely the prerequisites for the development of the historical Lithuanian armed forces in 1863 and their functioning, leaving aside the issues pertaining to the command over and administration of the January uprising which have been bestowed more attention in historiography. Analysis of the birth and existence of the insurgent army as a volunteer unit covering the moral motives, peculiarities of development, structure, internal order, everyday life, and provision for the forces is based on Lithuanian, Polish, and Russian archival materials, published sources, and special literature.
