ENThe history of Vilnius and the Vilnius region during the First World War have not aroused much interest of historians so far. Undoubtedly, the conviction of a relatively modest source base and strong dispersion of useful materials were not conductive to the research. Another discouraging factor was the complexity of the region's history in the years of the Great War and the dynamics of the changes. In the text the author draws attention to the importance of diaries and memoirs for the study of the history of Vilnius and the Vilnius region during the First World War. A large part of them still remains in the form of manuscripts or typescripts, some have lived to see the publication. Among the latter there are four publications issued in the series Kresy w polskich pamiętnikach i listach (1795-1918). Those materials constitute the main base for this text. The diaries and journals we refer to have been published in two positions. The first includes: the memoirs of a landowner Stanisław Aleksandrowicz, from the years 1914-1918, the diary of an aristocrat Wincent Wacław Łubieński, from the years 1915-1916, and the diary of a bank official Tadeusz Hryniewicz of 1915. The second publication includes the diary of Michał Brensztejn who was active as a writer, journalist and scientist. The originals are stored in Lithuania, Poland and the UK. [From the publication]
