ENJozef Ignacy Kraszewski left correspondence which in terms of volume is as impressive as his writing legacy. For more than half a century the writer remained in close contact with dozens of people providing them with an extensive coverage of his work, fascinations and news of family and friends. The letters are a valuable source of information about the Volyn region, which was Kraszewski's 'second' motherland and where he returned repeatedly. In his letters, the writer describes Volyn as a land of former Poland which preserved the ancient hierarchical social structure, where landowners, Jews and peasants occupy their traditional positions, there are no cultural and language barriers, and nothing prevents Kraszewski from remaining in contact with the local gentry, particularly those who have the same taste for history and literature.
