ENThe coterie of Peterburg was a literary group gathered around the magazine "Tygodnik Petersburski". The most active memebers of this circle were Michał Grabowski, Henryk Rzewuski, Ignacy Hołowiński and Józef Ignacy Kraszewski. The primary interest of the group were reflections on letters and diaries. The members of the circle were the authors of letters. Michał Grabowski divided the correspondence into two parts: private and public. For him, letter writing was yet another form of literature. Grabowski believed that diaries were historical sources. In his view, they could be exploited to reconstruct details of history. In its programme, the coterie aimed to promote the culture of Volyn, Podolia, Polesia and Lithuania in order to gain world-class recognition for it.
