Summary / Abstract:

LTReikšminiai žodžiai: Akcentologija; Fortunatovo-de Sosiūro dėsnis; Kirtis; Kirčiavimo sistema; Priesaga; Veiksmažodiniai daiktavardžiai; Šakninis kirtis; Accentology; Root stress; Stress; Stress patterning; Suffix; The Law of Fortunatov-de Saussure; Verbal nouns.

ENDaukša’s 1595 Catechism is seen to give a clearer picture of the stress patterning of -imas verbal nouns than we find in Skardžius, Daukšos akcentologija, on which Stang relies in associating root stress in these formations with lengthened-grade preterit stems ending in a sonorant. It is proposed that stress advancement to an acute root in prefixed verb stems, in connection with Saussurc’s Law, was a contributing factor in the later variation in stress assignment characterizing -imas verbal nouns.
