Summary / Abstract:

ENThe Lithuanian and Latvian terms for two mustclids formerly found in the Baltic, the wolverine and the mink, arc analyzed. Lith. ernis, -io ‘wolverine’ is seen to derive from IE *er-/or-/r}- "... erregen (auch seelisch, ärgern, reizen)’, in reference to the beast’s temperament. Latv. ämrija ‘wolverine; glutton’ is a compound the first element of which is reflected in Lith. dial, ómoti ‘kimšti, godžiai valgyti’. Lith. audinė, audine (асе. sg. audinę) ‘(European) mink’ is derived from the IE root for ‘water’.
