National configurations of a character of Herkus Monte
Summary / Abstract:

ENThe subject of this article is an analysis of the ways of presenting a historical character - the leader of Prussian uprisings, Herkus Monte, in three literary traditions, namely Polish, Lithuanian and German. The hero of the Prussian nation first found his place in literature thanks to a Latin chronicle written by Piotr of Dusburg. This chronicle became an intertextual hypertext for subsequent historical writers and literary fiction. The literary Herkus Monte, he leader of the 2nd Prussian uprising, obtained many varied "existences", in each of the mentioned cultures. Monte, wearing a mask of Adam Mickiewicz’s Konrad Wallenrod, is both a traitor, a savior who dies for his country in the name of romantic sacrifice for the greater good-saving the conquered Fatherland. Juozas Grušas’s "Herkus Mantas" from the 1950s is almost a Lithuanian national hero, because the Lithuanians, like the Balts, up to the present day feel close connection with the Prussians. The historical relations between the Germans and the Prussians, which gave the name to one of the biggest administrative-public formations, are obvious. The 19th century, called alternatively the century of history, drew writers’ interest to the fate of the conquered country, and especially its hero. Many of the German historical novels are devoted to Herkus Monte (Fr. Lubojatzky, A. Heinrich, O. V. Gomen (pen name), A. J. Cüppers, H. Bauer, B. Graf von Keyserlingk, R. Lauckner, and also W. Pierson and M. Springborn). In the article, the following texts were analyzed: Franz Lubojatzky’s "Herkus Monte" from 1840 as well as "Herkus Monte" written by Marty Springborn in 1897, from the point of view of a post-colonial critique.
