Summary / Abstract:

ENThe following article presents Moldavian politics of Alexander Jagiellon and outlines the reasons why a new Polish king abandoned an attempt of solving the Polish-Moldavian problems (above all, a contentious issue of political affiliation of Pokuttya) by virtue of an armed conflict advocated by his predecessor John Albert. Alexander Jagiellon struggled with growing problems connected to the protection of south-east lands of the Kingdom of Poland, the necessity to support Lithuania, at least financially, in her conflict with Moscow, and a reluctant stance of the inhabitants of Greater Poland who considered a struggle for Pokuttya as a waste of time and money-from their perspective owing to its distant location. In the face of these problems the king decided to relinquish a military conflict with Moldavia and try to regain Pokuttya peacefully. Bogdan in the One-Eyed, the Moldavian Voivode, who struggled with the opposition in his own country and with increasing Turkish influence, met the expectations of the king and found in him a powerful ally. Therefore, he proposed a deal to the Polish side - a marriage to the royal sister Elisabeth in return to abandoning the right to Pokuttya. Although Bogdan discharged this agreement and gave Pokuttya to the Polish side, owing to the resistance of the magnates fearing to anger Turkey, the marriage with the royal sister was not materialized, which resulted in capturing Pokuttya by the Voivode and organizing a retaliatory expedition of Hetman Mikołaj Kamieniecki.
