ENThe paper briefly reviews the relationship of historian and history, as well as with historical sources and the levels of historical knowledge, and relates that to the research conducted by Stephen C. Rowell and his studies of sources in a broader context of source analysis and its methodology. It should be stated that work with sources reveals the problems of the types of sources, the meanings of sources, and their analysis which pave the way to the most fundamental problem: the type of history that sources allow to write. The conception of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania as developed by S. C. Rowell is presented, and the issues of the LGD currently examined by him are introduced.
