ENThe continuing development of needed skills and knowledge of individuals is recognized as a strategic necessity of organizations in the modern society characterized by numerous and rapid changes. Effective human resources development could play the main role in the preparation and acceptance of organizational changes. The knowledge society depends for its growth on the production of new knowledge, its transmission through education and training, its dissemination through information and communication technologies and on its use. Universities being situated at the crossroads of research, education and innovation in many respects hold the key to the knowledge economy and society. University (academic) library is the main unit of universities participating in the process of university knowledge creation, dissemination and use. The concept of "Learning organization" has been developed in organizations from successful means of reflection to the rapid changing environment. Creating and maintaining the learning organization for academic libraries is presenting as a major challenge and opportunity in the article. Knowledge is a power in the modern society so the lack or the failure of libraries will depend on their ability to learn and adjust. The aims of the article are: to present the concept of the "learning organization" as the possible one for modernization of academic libraries, to analyse theoretical and practical assumptions for Lithuanian academic libraries to develop themselves towards the learning organizations. There is introduced the short history of different approaches to this conception with the main representatives of this conception in the article. Theoretical assumptions for employing this concept into academic libraries environment are based on review of publications in professional library literature. This review is accompanied with some examples of world academic libraries practice. In the light of current situation for Lithuanian academic libraries' managers could be recommended: to develop in their organizations culture of knowledge sharing, openness and trust, to promote and value of individual and organizational learning, to allow personnel participate actively in the management process.
