ENAlthough the Tatar Muslim men since the settling in the Grand Duchy of Lithuania intermarried with Christian women, and their descendants "inherited" father’s faith, the Tatar Muslim women could not marry men of different faith. Since the 17th century Muslims were forbidden to marry Christian women, but in spite of prohibition and persecutions the Tatars married them. Although not many punishments for such marriages were recorded, it is supposed that people disregarded the Tatar civil rights restriction, i.e. prohibition to marry Christian women. Muslim-Christian marriage in the society was treated more favorably than Jewish-Christian. This is related to the Tatar acculturation. In the 19th century, because of this prohibition on marriage with non-Muslims, the Tatars were forced to become neophytes and then marry legally. Supposedly, since the fifth decade of the 20th century, after the introduction of the civil registration, there have been more mixed marriages, but under pressure from the community, the children born of mixed marriages were attributed to the Tatar community, and later married members of the community. However, the assimilation of Tatars is great, so currently the Tatar community has an interest in Tatar families.
