Sposób przeprowadzenia rozgraniczenia diecezji w Cesarstwie Rosyjskim na przykładzie diecezji żmudzkiej (1848-1851)

ENThe article provides a detailed analysis of the procedure for altering boundaries between dioceses in the Russian Empire in the period from 1848 to 1851. These changes, referred to as demarcation, were a consequence of the concordat between the Holy See and the Russian Empire, signed in 1847. Although changes to the diocesan boundaries were only a part of this significant document, they were the only ones fully implemented. This was undoubtedly due to the efforts of Bishop Ignacy Hołowiński, the apostolic delegate and bishop coadjutor of Mogilev, who was assigned to carry out this task. Using previously unexplored manuscript and printed sources, the article delineates the exact process of altering the boundaries of the Diocese of Samogitia. Considering the bureaucratic nature of the Russian Empire, it is likely that similar processes were employed in other dioceses within its borders. Therefore, the boundary changes in the Diocese of Samogitia can be considered representative of the general procedure. The manuscript materials utilised in this article are sourced from the Lithuanian State Historical Archives in Vilnius. The addendum includes two previously unpublished documents: the bull of Pope Pius IX, Universalis Ecclesiae cura, in a nineteenth-century Polish translation, and the ceremony for the introduction of an apostolic subdelegate into Minsk Cathedral to read the papal bull to the congregation.
