Summary / Abstract:

ENThe article analyses the concepts of Lithuanian theatre theorist of beginning of the XXth century A. Sutkus in the context of modern theater theory. The main task is to delineate and to evaluate the influxes, which played significant role in the formation of A. Sutkus theatre theory. The short overview of modernist ideas and aesthetic notions is given with particular attention to the theories of G. Craig, Fuchs, N. Evreinov, F. Komisarzevski as well as diverse currents of artistic practises is analysed. The main features of modem theatre history, such as autonomy of theatrical performance, innovations in theory, non-mimetic representation, synthetical nature of theatre, signed to accomplish spiritual and symbolic renewal by revealing hidden meaning of objects is explored in the article. The basic problems and issues of A. Sutkus theatre theory, which are closely linked with European modem theatre tradition are investigated. His notions of theatre history, acting, directing, stage design along with ideas on communication in theatre, spiritual development of actor and spectator, psychological aspects of performance constitute the main part of the article. Consequently the issue of practical realisation of A. Sutkus theory is targeted.A. Sutkus was one of the first Lithuanian theatre directors, who followed the modem, innovative path of theatre aesthetics, whereas other Lithuanian directors such as J. Vaičkus, K. Glinskis maintained conservative naturalistic style. A. Sutkus strove to preserve the theatricality, to distinguish the specific features, means of expression that were exceptionally theatrical in their essence. His ideas about actor as the main element of theatre structure and performativity as essence of theatre as well as negation of logocentristic tradition are closely connected to modem concepts of theatre. The article traces the main paths by which modem theatre ideas reached Lithuania and analyses the role of A. Sutkus in these developments. [From the publication]
