On the problems encountered by business english students while performing comparative linguistic research

LTVertimo dėstytojai susiduria su iššūkiu, kaip ne tik išmokyti studentus versti iš vienos kalbos į kitą, bet ir pamėgti vertėjo darbą. Versdami studentai spėlioja, įgyja praktinių įgūdžių, kuriuos stengiasi paversti įpročiais. Kai įgūdžiai suformuojami, vertimo procesas pagreitėja. Vertėjas turi pateikti patikimą ir rišlų tekstą, tam būtina, kad vertėjas suprastų denotacines, pragmatines, ir lingvistines leksinių vienetų reikšmes; bei kokias vertimo perdaras naudoti verčiant tekstą. Verslo anglų kalbos studentai pritaiko teorines žinias praktiškai atlikdami lyginamąjį lingvistinį tyrimą, kurio metu analizuoja tekstus anglų kalba ir jų vertimus į lietuvių kalbą. Tyrimo metu pagrindinis dėmesys skiriamas įvairių reikšmių vertimui bei vertimo perdarų praktiniam taikymui. Studentų nuomone, šis tiriamasis darbas padeda tobulinti anglų kalbos kompetencijas. Straipsnyje pateikiama trumpa teorinės medžiagos apie denotacines, pragmatines ir lingvistines leksinių vienetų reikšmesbei vertimo perdaras apžvalga. Taip pat straipsnyje aptariamos problemos, su kuriomis susidūrė antro kurso anglų verslo kalbos studentai, atlikdami lyginamąjį John Galsworthy romano “Forsaitų saga” ir Irenos Marijos Balčiūnienės vertimo tyrimą. Apibendrinant, tyrimo rezultatai parodė, kad užduoties atlikimas priklauso ne tik nuo studentų kalbinių kompetencijų bet ir nuo jų noro savarankiškai mokytis ir tobulinti asmenines kompetencijas.

ENTranslator trainers nowadays are faced with the challenge for learners not only to gain knowledge but also enjoy the work of translator to continue doing it. To deal with novel situations, students use guesses, practice, and rules, and convert what they learn in those novel situations into "habitual" or "instinctive" processing. The more "subliminally" or "habitually" they can work, the faster they can translate. A translator should produce a reliable and cohesive translation, and this can be reached only by comprehending the concepts of denotative, pragmatic and linguistic meanings of lexical units as well as recognising translation shifts necessary to make the translation obey the rules of a target language. In order to apply the theoretical knowledge in practice, the students of the study programme of Business English conduct a comparative linguistic research which includes the study of English texts and their Lithuanian translations in terms of rendering various meanings and applying translation shifts. As the students state, the comparative linguistic study of English texts and their translations contributes to the linguistic competence of the learners of English. The article gives a short outline of theoretical views related to denotative, pragmatic and linguistic meanings of lexical units as well as translation shifts, and discusses the problems encountered by second-year students of Business English while performing a comparative linguistic analysis of John Galsworthy's "The Forsyte Saga" and its translation made by Irena Marija Balčiūnienė. A deeper insight into the issue suggests a conclusion that the fulfilment of the task depends not only on the linguistic awareness of a student and his/her knowledge of the English and Lithuanian languages, but also on their willingness to self-study and improve their competences.
